Prescriptions

What is an NHS prescription?

An NHS prescription is a document provided by a qualified prescriber, such as a doctor, under the National Health Service. In England, NHS prescription charges are set by the NHS, although  you may qualify for an exemption from these charges. Occasionally, a single item may attract more than one charge, which is determined by NHS guidelines.

We’ll inform you if this applies to your prescription.

In contrast, NHS prescriptions are free of charge in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

What is a private prescription?

A private prescription is issued by a healthcare professional, such as a doctor or dentist, when the medication is not covered by the NHS.  Unlike NHS prescriptions, private prescriptions do not qualify for payment exemptions, meaning you will need to cover the full cost. The price for a private prescription depends on the specific medication and its associated costs.

What is a one off prescription?

A one-off prescription is provided by a prescriber, such as a doctor, to address a temporary medical condition. It typically involves medication intended for short-term use, such as antibiotics for an infection or painkillers for injury-related discomfort.

What is a repeat prescription?

A repeat prescription is issued by a healthcare professional, such as a doctor, for managing long-term health conditions that require ongoing treatment, such as asthma, eczema, or diabetes. It enables you to obtain further supplies of your medication without needing to see your prescriber every time. The prescriber authorises repeated access to the medication for a set period, up until a review date is reached.

What is an electronic prescription?

The NHS Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) enables many GPs in England* to send prescriptions directly to a pharmacy of your choice electronically. This service provides a convenient and efficient way to access your medicines. Rather than needing to collect a paper prescription from your GP, you can go straight to your chosen pharmacy to pick up your medication. To use the EPS, you simply need to nominate a pharmacy that suits you.

*Available at participating GP surgeries only.

No, we do not currently offer this service.

Can I use a prescription that was not issued in the UK?
